Toddler catechism fail

We've been using the Baltimore Catechism at home with the children: it's so simple, and straightforward that even the youngest one picks up bits and pieces. As he's only two, we focus on the easy stuff like "Who made you? / God made you" and I thought that things were going well in his little head until...

...yesterday evening he toddled in from the garden with a smeared and dirty face, evidence of a feast in the blackberry bushes. "How did your face get so dirty?" I asked as I wiped his cheeks. The little brows furrowed for a moment, then he suddenly beamed and announced with the certainty of one who has learned his lesson well: "God make my face so dirty!"

I guess we still have some way to go...

  1. Our beautiful 2 year old girl has got used to pictures & icons of Our Lord and calls out "there's Jesus" when she sees one. Her granda (who is a Communist) asked her who the bearded man in his framed photo was and instead of saying "Fidel" like he wanted her to, she cried out "There's Jesus!" She's now saying prayers for Granda & Jesus to be friends again.

  2. @Éamonn - that's lovely! May her prayers help to reunite her Granda with Our Lord. God bless.

    I came here to your blog today via Father Finigan's blog, and noticed that you are living a happy but schizophrenic existence between South London and Southern France.

    Are you SSPX in France, but RC in Father Finigan's Parish?

    This facebook thread links you to my own post RICS qualified, Thames City Challenge development work 1984-2011 http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=117944018310960&id=540164568

    Sancte Michael Archangele,
    defende nos in proelio;
    contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
    Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
    tuque, Princeps militiae Caelestis,
    satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
    qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,
    divina virtute in infernum detrude.
    Amen

    Saint Michael the Archangel,
    defend us in battle;
    be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
    and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
    thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
    who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
    Amen.

    Will you be attending the inaugural meeting of the Guild of Blessed Titus Brandsma this coming Saturday at Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen?

    "They who want to win the world for Christ must have the courage to come into conflict with it."
    Blessed Titus Brandsma

    Bl Titus Brandsma, pray for us

  4. @Vesper - we go to ICRSP parishes when in France (we're big fans of the order -- see http://defende-nos-in-proelio.blogspot.com/search/label/ICRSP), or to our local Novus ordo cathedral which is 2 minutes from the front door (we have an excellent and very orthodox local PP). We're very lucky with parishes and priests in both England and France. Spoiled even!

    I'm hoping to make it to the blognic, family commitments permitting.

    God bless, AE
